Who is eligible for speech-language services in the schools?

In an educational setting, a child is eligible for intervention if the speech/language disability adversely affects academic progress as defined by the Core Curriculum Standards.  For example, area 3.0 Language Arts Literacy includes aspects of speaking, listening, writing, and reading.   The referral process can start with a classroom teacher, parent or other staff member.  Parents are always notified if their child is referred, and parent permission must be obtained before evaluation or interventions can begin.

What is a language disorder?

A language disorder is impaired development of comprehension and/or use of spoken, written, and/or other symbol system.  Form, content and/or function of language may be affected.

What is auditory processing?

Auditory processing is related to the ability to listen, remember, understand and use spoken information.

What is expressive language?
Expressive language includes the ability to speak and express thoughts and ideas.

What is speech articulation?

Articulation describes the oral motor movements needed to produce individual speech sounds.

What is phonology?

Phonology is the sound system of a language and the linguistic rules that govern the sound combinations.

What other areas might be considered for evaluation and treatment?  

We might look at abilities related to word awareness, grammar, vocabulary, language function, executive function, voice quality/rate/volume/fluency, and foundational reading skills.
